Our Story as a Parish

At the beginning of 2017 the two congregations of Piedmont Valley Lutheran and Atonement Lutheran made it offical and became one Partnered Ministry Convenant called “The Graceful Hills Parish”. Each church keeps their own name but when referring to both congregation as a whole, we call ourselves Graceful Hills Parish.

We believe that God has called us to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and that we can fulfill this calling more effectively through cooperation, mutual support, and sharing the ministries of Atonement Lutheran Church (ALC) and Piedmont Valley Lutheran Church (PVLC).

We are separate, independent congregations of the South Dakota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. As such, we assume responsibility for our own budgets, programs, property & assets, membership, employees, and administration, and we retain our own governing bodies. However, we will look to share resources and ministries wherever it is helpful, including worship, education, parish staffing, and other areas as seen fit. We do this seeking to proclaim God’s grace through Christ to our communities.

We believe the church is more than our own individual congregations. Called together by the Holy Spirit to become the body of Christ in our world, we will faithfully seek to strengthen each other, pray for each other, and partner together to do God’s work.

You are invited to become part of this family in either congregation. We look forward to meeting you!

Our Pastor

Pastor Sonja Pilman

Pastor Sonja Pilman is a First Call Minister of Word and Sacrament of the ELCA.

She and her husband Markus grew up in Switzerland. Switzerland is a small beautiful mountainous country above Italy and below Germany, famous for chocolate, cheese, and banks.
They came to the US in 2016 and lived just outside of San Francisco CA. St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in San Francisco and St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in San Mateo were Pastor Sonja’s internship sites. The experience of having two congregations sharing her time and talents prepared her well for serving the Graceful Hills Parish. The beauty of the Black Hills reminds her of the town she grew up in.

Pastor Sonja has a great passion for preaching and planning worship. She also enjoys working with youth and young adults and loves teaching confirmation classes but also adult education.

Feel free to contact her with your questions, concerns, prayer requests, and ideas. In person at either church or by phone/email.
